Why Billy would lounge (and nap) in the lowest shelf of the upstairs hall table instead on the softer rug (or cat tower across the hall) is beyond me, but he's in charge...
I think sometimes cats get a hankering for a smooth surface as opposed to a soft one. Ours like to hang out on top of the dryer (but not when it's running, so that rules out the "warm spot" theory).
